Linux package management is one of the biggest reasons that despite the struggles I've had with Ubuntu (mostly hardware incompatibilities and package conflicts) I just don't feel at home in Windows anymore. The package manager takes awhile to get used to, though, if you're as used to windows as I was. In addition, if there's not a backport of the newest version of Firefox (or whatever) for your distro and you're not confident with compiling, things can get sticky. Fortunately, the Ubuntu community is pretty large and there are a lot of tutorials and user-made scripts to deal with such things. However the quality of them can be inconsistant and I doubt Grandma would go looking for those... but Grandma probably doesn't care about getting the latest and greatest version of Firefox, either.
