The GP2X F200 Handheld Multimedia Device: I Want It

Gamepark Holdings is releasing an update to their totally sweet Linux-based device, the GP2X, this month. Designed primarily for the homebrew community using emulation and mobile media, it was on my wishlist around its initial release, but I never actually got one because I own a modded PSP. This new model, the GP2X F200, doesn’t change much on the inside, but they did decide to add a touch screen, making for a wealth of DS-style possibilities. GP2X F200

Though the main hardware is said to have remained mostly identical to the previous incarnation, it’s still a somewhat respectable hand-held device. With dual ARM processors, 64MB of SDRAM, and an SD slot for relatively cheap storage, it should have enough capability to satisfy most (at least in potential), and with a somewhat substantial developer community around these devices, at least some of that capability should be quickly put to use. Here are the specs for the GP2X F200 according to Gamepark:

In addition to the touchscreen, the new model sports a redesigned user interface, and an eight-way D-pad (replacing a reportedly flimsy thumb-stick). It will come with built-in games, support quite a few media codecs (XVid, DivX, Mp3, Ogg, and more with additional software), and have one feature I’ve always longed for on the PSP… a TV-out.

If you get into homebrew, emulators, or just sweet Linux hand-helds at all, I suggest you check it out at GP2X.com (for more pictures) and the following links. At about $250US, for the right people (the ones that would like to play their ‘Romance of the Three Kingdoms’ on the road), this could make a very worthwhile purchase.
