SCO’s Darl McBride is Full of Sh*t

Those of you who’ve been here before may have noticed that I tend to write and report a bit about SCO (NASDAQ: SCOX), but I can’t seem to help myself. Ever since they changed their business strategy from continuing development on valid market products to suing (and threatening to sue) every company using open source software under the Sun, I’ve been waiting for (and wanting) their demise. A report at Computer World came out today about an interview with SCO’s President and CEO, Darl McBride, and his thoughts on why the possibility of SCO’s death is greatly exaggerated. This is why it’s not.

SCO has been involved in more than a few lawsuits that were entirely built on SCO’s assumed ownership of AT&T/Bell Labs Unix source code and it’s assumed inclusion in the linux operating systems. Now, keep in mind, that they never made a single valid attempt a proving this, but, as of last month, a ruling by Judge Kimball has proven that they don’t even own the source code they’d been suing over.

Kimball’s ruling left SCO in Chapter 11 “reconstruction” and on the verge of a NASDAQ delisting with only two remotely potential sources of income, their OpenServer OS and Me Inc., their mobile services division. Besides that, all they seem to be left with are their mounting lawyer fees and court costs. OpenServer is everyday a less and less viable alternative to linux server products (or any other server products for that matter), and news about Me Inc. seems to have come to a grinding halt.

I honestly don’t see any way SCO can recover, with that $0.18 stock price (which, by-the-way, is lower than it costs to actually print a stock certificate), no seemingly viable market products, and the possibility of owing Novell up to three times their actual cash-on-hand. We’ve been watching Darl shout from his podium for years now, without any actual truth behind his statements, so why should we think this time will be any different? My thoughts on SCO: Don’t Buy.
