Asus’ EEE PC (You can read it: What I really want for xmas.)

If I could have any sub-$500 device out there right now, what would it be? Do I want an iPhone? I do, but really… who doesn’t? Would I rather have the next-gen OpenMoko device? Of course. Would I be more willing to drop $280 on a totally sweet ASUS sub-compact notebook PC that runs it’s own flavor of linux?

*EDIT* Wanted to drop a picture.

If ASUS were to push marketing this device in the States, it could be one of the most sought-after devices this holiday season. Granted, right now, it’s already coveted by an entire geek community (EeeUser.com) and everyone that’s been watching it since it first showed it’s 7″ face on Engadget, but, luckily, I don’t see it gaining mass market, general population adoption like the iPhone. It has been hinted at here and there, and those of us who’ve been watching see changes in price, updates on hardware, and the occasional review (ASUS, if you’re watching, I’d happily help out in this category). We haven’t, however, seen a network TV commercial series ala Apple, and that is, in some respects, a good thing. It gives us fanatical geeks the opportunity to keep it all for ourselves, even if at the expense of ASUS’ own opportunity. Hell, with only a half million units shipping world wide by the end of the year, this comparably small fervor over this possibly HUGE product could guarantee we all get sub-kilogram boxes under the tree this year.

P. S. Santa, you hear me, baby.

It would be perfect, except that the screen resolution is only 800 pixels wide. Imagine all the horizontal scrolling you will do in websites.

I’ll hold off until a 1024 pixel comes along.

True. There has been word, however of an EEE PC 801 with an 8″ screen and higher resolution. Considering the price, though, I think I could manage. Or, is there an auto resize firefox extension?

you don’t have to advertise a thing that will sell out imediately.

Really, though, I don’t think it will (or is that just hope?).

It looks good on picture, but in reality I think it’s a bit too small. I mean 7″, how big will a key be on it’s keyboard ? On the other hand … if you manage to get used to pushing the keys with a pen or smth (find yourself other sollutions here, I’m sure you are creative ppl) it will fit right into your pocket (you have to have a bit large pockets, but what the heck)

Actually it’s more than 8 1/2 inches wide. Still a bit cramped I’m sure, but I’ve typed plenty on a Dell Inspiron 700m and that’s not cramped at all. Granted that’s a 10″ screen (I think), but there’s no speakers on either side of the screen. One problem with it though, they actually made the period and the comma half size so they can share a spot. Think www,tr,com… shit.
